1.What is photoluminescent exit signs

Photoluminescent signs (aka “glow-in-the-dark signs”) are a useful technology for exit and egress signage. They glow without a dedicated power source. Instead, they absorb the energy of light from normally well-lit surroundings—often a particular wavelength of light—and release it over time as a glow.

These signs are suitable for areas with a regular source of light, as the light will 'charge' the signs. The signs will then shine bright should the power supply fail providing exceptionally high brightness within the first few minutes.

It has the characteristics of simple installation, no power on, non-toxic, non radioactive and maintenance free.

2.Do fire exit signs have to be photoluminescent?

Equally the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 does not mention photoluminescent signs. ... That said, the far more obscure BS 16069 does advise that all emergency signs should be made from a photoluminescent material.
